10. Battlefield 4

The video game was released in 2013 and it is one of the most popular in the world. It is developed by the company EA Digital Illusion CE and published by Electronics Arts. It is a shooter video game adapted for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Battlefield 4's single-player Campaign takes place during the fictional "War of 2020", six years after the events of its predecessor. Tensions between Russia and the United States have been running at a record high, due to a conflict between the two countries that has been running for the last six years. On top of this, China is also on the brink of war, as Admiral Chang, the main antagonist, plans to overthrow China's current government. Next game in the ranking of the most popular online games is the action role-playing game Diablo III. It was developed and released by Bizzard Entertainment in 2012 and it was adapted for Microsoft Windows and OS X. Since its first appearance, Diablo III set a new record for the fastest selling PC game with sales amounting to 3.5 million copies back in the first 24 hours. 

Much like in Diablo and Diablo II, the quality and attributes of equipment are randomized. In addition to base stats (such as damage and attack speed for weapons or armor points on armor) higher-quality items have additional properties such as extra damage, attribute bonuses, bonuses to critical hit chance, or sockets, which allow items to be upgraded with a gem. Magic-quality items have up to three random properties, rare-quality items have up to six, and legendary-quality items typically have up to eight with varying degrees of randomness. Set items are a subtype of legendary items which provide additional, cumulative bonuses if multiple items from the same set are equipped at once. Higher level monsters tend to drop higher level items, which tend to have higher base stats and bonuses.

Developed by Hi-Rez Studios, Smite is one of the most played online video games. It is an action multiplayer video game released in 2014 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One. Smite features many different game modes with the largest being Conquest. Players can choose between Training (vs AI), Custom, Co-Op (with clan/friends), Normal and Ranked play styles. From there, they can choose between a variety of standard game modes. Special event games with unique rules like unlimited gold are also often introduced.

Minecraft is published by the Swedish company Mojang. Minecraft is beloved by millions of gamers around the world who use the platform to test their creativity.

World of Tanks occupies the 5th position in our list of the most popular video games. It is also a multiplayer game, but it is free to use as its users have the option to additionally use some paid premium features. World of Tanks holds the Guinness World Record for the most concurrent players online on a single server with over 305,000 users playing concurrently in 2013. The player takes control of a single armored tank or self-propelled artillery vehicle of their choice, and is placed into a battle on a random map. The player has control over the vehicle's movement, firing, and can communicate with allied players and all the other players through typed or voice chat. A simple random match is won either by destroying all vehicles on the opposing team or capturing the opposing team's base by staying in it for long enough without being damaged by another tank. There are other game modes that change the rules of the battle, but gameplay mechanics remain the same. World of Tanks contains multiple game mechanics such as camouflage, shell ricochets, and module and personnel damage.

Developed by Valve Corporation, Dota 2 is another extremely popular online video game. It was released in July 2013 and like many others on the list, it is a multiplayer online game. Dota 2 boasts over 800,000 concurrent players daily. It is specially developed for Microsoft Windows, OSX and Linux. Dota 2 is a video game in which two teams of five players compete to destroy a large structure defended by the opposing team known as the "Ancient" whilst defending their own. As in Defense of the Ancients, the game is controlled using standard real-time strategy controls, and is presented on a single map in a three-dimensional isometric perspective. Ten players each control one of the game's 123 playable characters, known as "heroes", with each having their own design, strengths, and weaknesses. Heroes are divided into two primary roles, known as the core and support.

3. World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is a multiplayer online role-playing game created in 2004 by Bizzard Entertainment. The game holds the Guinness World Record for most subscribed players with its over 10 million subscribers. The game encourages players to work together to complete quests, enter dungeons and engage in player versus player (PvP) combat, however the game can also be played solo without interacting with others. WoW primarily focuses on character progression, in which players earn experience points to level up their character to make them more powerful and buy and sell items using in-game currency to acquire better equipment, among other game systems.

The fourth game in the Counter-Strike series, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, is an online shooter game developed and released by Valve Corporation and Hidden Path Entertainment on August 21, 2012. In terms of its popularity, it also ranks among the most played online games in the world. In 2012, CS: GO was the best-selling video game with more than 12 million copies sold during the year.

It is a multiplayer online video game developed and released on October 27, 2009 by Roit Games for Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX. League of legends game is estimated to have more than 27 million active daily players, making it extremely popular with the gaming community. Moreover, as of November 2021, there are 157 champions available to play Over the course of a match, champions gain levels by accruing experience points (XP) through killing enemies. Items can be acquired to increase champions' strength, and are bought with gold, which players accrue passively over time and earn actively by defeating the opposing team's minions, champions, or defensive structures. In the main game mode, Summoner's Rift, items are purchased through a shop menu available to players only when their champion is in the team's base. Each match is discrete; levels and items do not transfer from one match to another.
